Wooden Travelling Trunk – JL THORPE
Wooden trunk used by Joseph Leslie Thorpe when he emigrated to South Africa in June 1949.
Before that, it was used by his wife’s sister, Cecilia Mary Reader, who was a nursing Sister (S/R) in Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service during World War II.
The letters “Reader QARNNS S/R” are still visible under the paint on top of the trunk.
Cecilia was sent by QARNNS from the UK to Mombasa, where she nursed soldiers & sailors injured in the campaigns in India & the Far East.
